Ee Adutha kalathu –
It’s the time of experimentation in Malayalam industry, Arun Kumar Aravind movie Ee adutha kalathu offers a new package with a distinctive narrative style with a compellingly good story line.
Story and screenplay by Murali Gopy draws its story thread from the Rubik’s cube, which has a lot of possible combinations that can happen with countless twists and turns and in the end when all the combinations get synced, the end looks perfect from anyway you look at it .
The Film as the title suggest talks about an event that’s just happened in the city in which Vishnu (Indrajith), Remani ( Mythili) , Ajay kurien( Murali Gopy), Madhuri (Tanushree ghosh), Tom cherian(Anoop menon), Rupa (Leena) coming from different walks of life get connected.
Vishnu makes a living by collecting used items dumped in the garbage ground of the city and recycles them to toys. He makes a living by selling these Toys. Remani his wife is a house hold maid and they live in the slum of the city. Ajay Kurien is a highly successful business man but at the same time highly depressed person who is married to Madhuri -who has played small time roles in bollywood. Their marriage is on the rocks and Madhuri is confined to the house, without any freedom to choose or go anywhere without Ajay’s permission. Madhuri is desperately wanting to break free.
Tom Cherian, plays the character of City police commissioner who is under extreme pressure to nab a serial killer who is on the prowl. Rupa who portrays herself as feminist and wants to move away from the conventional satire of the society, she is TV reporter and highly successful investigative Journalist. Tom cherian has a soft corner to Rupa.
These characters start to cross each other’s path and the story unfolds.
Film has a screening time of close to 2.45Hrs and by far the longest movie I would say, my last two movies have been Second show and Nindra. The film is able to hold the audience together for such a long time and the secret of that being
“All is going to End well”.
Throughout the film, we get a feeling that when the characters in the movie choose to travel in a wrong direction, something is going to happen to make it right. This anticipation keeps things moving in the film towards its end.
Film focuses on the contemporary issues of waste dumping, Hidden Sex videos and the organized crime behind that, influx of north Indian population in Kerala and how criminals easily blend in with them, Friendship – how good a friend can be, and what’s the value of virtue. Black humor is at play in the film and violent scenes do not look that gruel.
Film is supported by some great performances by all, and special mention to Indrajith who has adopted the character so easily. This is one actor that the malyalam industry has to stand up and make note. Tanushree has done a commendable job and I only wished that they could have had a better dubbing in place. Anoop, Lina and Mythali has done their respective roles well. Murali Gopy is the other stand out actor in the movie.
The film duration could have been better done with a little bit of tight editing and a few avoidable shots, apart from that there is nothing negative as such.
Verdict:
This is a must watch film because of numerous reasons like different way of story telling , a new age cinema where it’s the characters in the movie that matter and not the star power, and at the end of movie you feel…great and happy.
It’s not always that u get things in the right combination even after going through such different turns like a Rubik’s cube but when it does, it’s a cinderella kind a feeling. Go out and watch.
